There is nothing at this cost

The first LS50 speakers had nothing to do with them, but after eight years KEF decided they needed new looks. With the LS50 Meta they’ve given us a great upgrade.

The LS50’s UniQ driver array, in which the tweeter is located in the middle of the mid/bass unit is completely redesigned to incorporate all the improvements that KEF has come up with over the last 8 years, and adding something brand new with the Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT). The MAT feature is KEF’s way of dealing with the sound that emanates from the back of the tweeter’s dome and a circular plastic maze of tubes that runs along the back promises better absorption, which results in better, more balanced highs.

Although the basic sound is immediately familiar however, the Meta speakers have achieved an additional precision and clarity that the originals were only hints at, and sound clear and yet offering strength and dynamism.

We’ve always loved the originals but our LS50 Meta is a great upgrade. LS50 Meta takes the performance to a much higher standard.

Wharfedale’s Diamond collection now includes an outstanding (and inexpensive) floorstander. We were in fact amazed by that Wharfedale Diamond 12.3’s musical performance that we declared it to be a What Hi-Fi? Award 2021 Winner.

At 98cm at 98cm, the Diamond 12.3 aren’t the most impressive set of floorstanders. Consequently, they’ll be able to fit in most rooms. They sound well-balanced, smooth and refined for the price. Give them a bad signal and they’ll smooth out rough edges and reduce excessive aggression without sounding like they’re taking the life that music.

In terms of the build quality the cabinets are expertly constructed using a classic straight-edge design, and neat feet arrangement. The 12.3 are offered in four different finishes – white, black, walnut and a stylish light oak, all of which are reflected in the relatively low cost.

If you’re in the market for affordable high-end speakers, the acclaimed Wharfedale 12.3 are a great purchase.

One of the standmounters with the greatest potential we’ve ever heard of at this price.

Tough competitors

Elac’s low-cost standmounters are excellent quality for the price. The standmounts are sturdy and simple to place the Debut B5.2s come with the powerful tone, clarity and ability to take on whatever you can throw at them, and they have enough flexibility in their capabilities to enhance even more when connected to a premium system.

The new 5.25cm mid/bass unit makes use of the latest blend of aramid fibers for the cone, paired with the shape of the cone to increase the stiffness and damping. In addition, the tweeter boasts a high-end response of 35kHz. This adds plenty of sparkle.

Tonally, they’re not able to match the rich midrange warmth similar to the Dalis (below) however, they’re superbly balanced and capable of producing the finest recordings even ones of low quality.

Elac has been involved in the field of speaker manufacturing since the 1980s , and has created a number of high-quality products during that time. It’s safe to say that the newly released Debut B5.2 speakers are to be considered to be among Elac’s best efforts. For the price they’re awe-inspiring.
